Last week was National Women’s Health Week - but don’t worry if you missed it.  The site is there (Society for Women’s Health Research) and you can still find out all that they do - through the coming year and more, I think.  It seems to me that this begs the question: What’s up with this?  We’re 50% of the population and yet we need a society devoted to our health issues?  IS there a society for men’s health?

Oh, my.  I must sound like a real grinch complaining about getting this attention.  Check out Revolution Health’s Women’s Health Expo featuring more sites devoted specifically to women on  specific diseases and issues specific to women.

I notice that they don’t have anything about staying healthy while keeping a career while living with chronic illness.  Hmmm.  Do you think that’s one too many things to think about?

P.S. A reader emailed  to tell me our book, Women, Work and Autoimmune Disease:  Keep Working Girlfriend, has the wrong page numbers in the Table of Contents. The publisher is very apologetic (it happened between the galley and the final version) and it will be corrected. I hope this won’t stop you (or lead you to think less of us) -  you can still easily find the chapters should you need to.

Hi, Rosalind! Well, I think the cynic would say that the medical establishment in general is geared towards men’s health.

I don’t really have a problem with separate organizations focusing on “women’s issues,” although I recognize that that has the potential to marginalize our needs and underscore the erroneous assumption that our concerns are “trivial” and not as worthy of funding and attention as those that affect men. Still, at least someone is shining the spotlight on the reality that men and women have different responses to disease and health.

I’m toying with the idea of writing an article about living with chronic illness while pursuing a career, especially for low-income women who don’t have the resources or support that executive, professional women often enjoy. I’ll definitely have to read your book!

    Cheers,
    Marjorie
